Biography

Dr. Smith Ouma is a Senior Legal Consultant in our Corporate Commercial practice, and specializes on Property Law and Health Law.

He’s an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Cardiff University (UK), a Masters of Laws (LLM) from Loyola University Chicago (USA), and a Bachelors Degree in Law (LLB) from the University of Nairobi.

He has experience in handling complex Corporate Commercial advisory work, including complex commercial disputes. Previously, he worked with the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group in Chicago where he participated in a project to establish a database of health and social services facilities to facilitate access to health care in South-side Chicago. He continues to consult for various organizations on land rights and access to health in Kenya.

He has authored and co-authored various topical articles, which have been published in leading journals, including the Journal of Eastern African Studies, the Journal of Urban Affairs, the Wisconsin Journal of International Law and the Berkeley Journal of African American Law and Policy.

Alongside Kariuki, F., and Ng’etich, R, Dr. Ouma authored a book titled Property Law, which was published by the Strathmore University Press in 2016.

He has also contributed to book chapters, such as Decentering Property Norms. in Wall Illan et al (eds) The Critical Legal Pocketbook, and Realising Rights in Complex Informal Settlements Contexts: The Case of Mukuru Informal Settlements, Nairobi. in Cobbinah, P.B. & Gaise, E. (eds) Reimagining Urban Planning in Africa (Cambridge University Press).

Alongside consulting for our firm, he is also a Research Fellow at a University in the United Kingdom.
